It wasn’t until the 16th century, however, that devices to measure changes in body temperature were developed. And even with the creation of these instruments, their widespread clinical use only began in the 1870’s when Carl Reinhold Wunderlich, a professor of medicine in Leipzig, Germany, connected changes in body temperatures with severity of illness.
